My great idea of the day…
- Shooters in the NHL’s shootouts this year scored on 315 of 1298 shots, or 32.76%.
- Shooters of penalty shots were 25 for 70, or 35.71%.
- Power Plays in this year’s regular season resulted in 17.59% success, and 2.25% shorthanded. Subtracting the shorthanded from the power play goals success rate yields 15.34% success.
Why should you care? I think that penalty shots ought to include a shot, and if missed, THEN a power play. Like the intentional or flagrant foul in basketball. Sometimes the team whose goalie stops a penalty shot (almost 13 times out of 20) gets a momentum boost, which is totally backwards. I doubt any team would intentionally miss the shot in order to have a greater advantage, but shouldn’t that be their choice? (If you had just come off a power play, and knew they were tired, maybe you do…).
Thanks to PennLive for the Penalty Shot stats…the NHL site doesn’t have them.
