Wanna buy the home of a former MLB All-Star?

September 27th, 2007 · No Comments

The AJC sure is generous. Today on the AJC home page, center fielder Andruw Jones and his family’s home is “featured.” Featured in the way a seller’s agent features their “open house of the week.” Andruw’s baseball contract is up, and rather than having a stellar year that would make his agent […]

Book Review: Moneyball by Michael Lewis

September 10th, 2007 · No Comments

I just finished a great book. If you’re into baseball, statistics, and the incompleteness of typical baseball statistics, then “Moneyball” by Michael Lewis (2003) is for you. I also came to learn of a fairly large contingent of sabermetricians, who pretty much treat a gentleman named Bill James as both founder and their god.
The […]

SnapShots added

May 21st, 2007 · No Comments

As you’ll notice, I’ve added a cool little feature called SnapShots to the blog, so when I link now you can preview the link before you head off into never never land. I got this idea from JC Bradbury’s Sabernomics, one of my favorite blogs. Sabernomics is all about the economics of baseball. […]

NHL Penalty Shots, a potential rule change

May 7th, 2007 · No Comments

My great idea of the day…

Shooters in the NHL’s shootouts this year scored on 315 of 1298 shots, or 32.76%.
Shooters of penalty shots were 25 for 70, or 35.71%.
Power Plays in this year’s regular season resulted in 17.59% success, and 2.25% shorthanded. Subtracting the shorthanded from the power play goals success rate yields 15.34% […]

FEMA/HUD Gulf Coast Assistance - Analysis of Federal Housing Program Extension

April 27th, 2007 · 3 Comments

Let me first start by saying I’ve been fairly cynical of the federal government’s continued extension of fully subsidized housing since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. I’ve been critical of it because it’s really giving out fish, not teaching to fish, as the old saying goes. I’ve gathered that the displaced residents want help […]

A short period of asterisk-fighting?

April 26th, 2007 · No Comments

As a follow-up to last year’s post on the all-time HR record…
The New York Yankees’ Alex Rodriguez won’t be 32 until the end of July. According to my projections, he will most certainly pass Hank Aaron and Barry Bonds for the all-time MLB career home run record, if he stays at all healthy. […]

106 days as a city, and we’re broke!

April 26th, 2007 · No Comments

In a recent settlement by the newly formed City of Hampton, GA the city settled with a plaintiff whose daughter was killed by a man speeding from what she claimed an unnecessary police chase. Hampton, GA was only a city for 106 days when it settled a lawsuit where it will pay some portion of […]

Why is the NHL boring this year?

February 21st, 2007 · 1 Comment

Since the NHL Owners are meeting this week, I thought I’d review why the league seems so boring to me this year, yet my team (Atlanta) is tied for first in their division.
Are teams stalling in OT to get to the shootout? Yes, as 60% of games tied in regulation now end in a […]

NHL Teams’ overtime strategies…debunked

February 21st, 2007 · No Comments

NHL Coaches, I have your post-regulation overtime game strategies right here. This is based off reviewing your 2006-2007 Overtime (OT) and Shootout (SO) records through yesterday, 2/20/07. But since it’s based off of your team’s history, you might have already been employing this strategy, or just failing in whatever you try.
Luckily the playoffs […]

White Jerseys win Super Bowl XLI

February 5th, 2007 · No Comments

Who will win Super Bowl XLII in Arizona next year?
That’s easy. The team not wearing white. Although the White jerseys have won 24 of 41 Super Bowls, yesterday’s win by the Colts marks the White Jerseys’ fifth three game winning streak. Yet they have never won four in a row, and that’s […]
